The Story

The "marmifera" with its marble blocks crosses the principal viaduct of Vara bridges

The project of Sartorio too met many difficulties and it was necessary to integrate it in part to make it more complete. To be able to reach the basins of Colonnata, Fantiscritti and Ravaccione they had thought of making the railway go down from the terminal of the " Piastra " towards the station of Torano, from which a new railway branch began. It developed side by side to the existing branch but to be covered in the opposite direction towards Miseglia.

Through the tunnel of " Monte Croce " the trains would have arrived, then , at the basin of Vara where two viaducts were to be built. The second viaduct would have become the symbol of Carrara and its marble quarries because of the boldness and the elegance of the forms and also for the spectacular scenary surrounding it. After Fantiscritti canal the trains would have gone towards the " Tarnone " through a series of tunnels and small bridges along Colonnata canal. The stations of Fantiscritti and Ravaccione were reached through the two long tunnels of the" Monte Novelli " and of the " Torrione " starting from the Tarnone. The project was approved in 1886 and the marmifera society had to undertake to finish the works within four years. The works were given to the " Società Veneta " . The new branches were inaugurated on th 15th May 1890.
